Baxter Estates, with its beautiful vista of Manhasset Bay, is known for its park-like setting, wooded parkland areas and the watershed Barbara Johnson Park and Preserve at Baxter's Pond which lies in the center of the village. Residents prize the village's peaceful and friendly atmosphere and its stock of oaks and other majestic trees which give the village its special character. The village was incorporated in 1931.

The Mayor and Trustees of the Village of Baxter Estates are extremely saddened by the fire that damaged The Baxter House in the early morning hours on Sunday, February 5th. The Baxter House structure and parcel are a designated historic site under the Village Code. Village officials were notified by Chief Brian Watterson and Ex-Chief Chris Bollerman, that the fire was underway, and several officials immediately visited and remained at the scene, interacting with the fire and emergency responders. The property owner and her attorney and architect met with several Village officials Sunday morning, and were advised of the obligation to secure the property. The Village joins the community in their feeling of grief over the damage to this beloved and historic landmark, which has played a central role in our community's identity. The Village awaits reports from the Office of the Nassau County Fire Marshal and the Village Building Inspector regarding the fire and the condition of the property.
